What I Tried: Original, Strawberry, Vanilla

I know what you are thinking…“What is animal free dairy milk?”.  Bored cow is milk that is made from whey protein just like actual milk, but it is produced by fermentation instead of by animals.  This means the end result is identical to dairy but created by healthy bacteria instead of animals.  The milk is lactose free and fortified with the vitamins and minerals you find in dairy.  You heard me right, Bored Cow is lactose free!  Although the product has not yet been certified as vegan because it is the first replicated animal-based product, it is 100% animal free.  This is a really cool cow’s milk-alternative because it is climate-conscious since it uses less land and water, and it produces fewer emissions than dairy farming while still letting you enjoy real milk.

Original – The original milk is an unflavored milk.  It has the neutral flavor of regular milk with the perfect amount of creaminess and a subtle sweetness you would find in whole milk.  I tend to find that shelf-stable milk in cartons tends to have a hint of a boxy, paper flavor to it.  While the flavored bored cow does not have a carton flavor, since the original flavor is more neutral I taste a hint of a papery flavor when I drink it alone.  That being said, this means I simply don’t drink it alone.  I love using it in my cereal, mac-n-cheese, coffee, and for baking.  In these applications, I cannot tell the difference between Bored Cow and regular milk.  In the past, I always used almond milk, but now I tend to prefer Bored Cow when it comes to my cereal and mac-and-cheese.  Sometimes nothing beats the taste and texture of real milk.  Bored Cow is the perfect alternative that is both better for animals and the planet.

Strawberry – Bored Cow’s strawberry milk is my favorite flavor.  It is subtly sweet and fruity with the perfect creamy texture and satisfying milky flavor.  It reminds me of strawberry Nesquik but slightly less sweet.  It is impossible to tell the difference between this and actual milk.  It is the perfect treat that reminds me of a favorite childhood drink while being much healthier. 

Vanilla – The vanilla milk is the perfect, subtly sweet vanilla milk.  It is flavored with vanilla extract which gives it a pure, light vanilla flavor.  It tastes identical to real flavored milk.  Most vanilla milks are chock-full of sugar, but Bored Cow’s vanilla milk only contains 14g of sugar.  It tastes just like refreshing vanilla ice cream.  I love drinking it alone or adding it to my coffee for a touch of sweet vanilla goodness.
