Review:
Salt & Straw, an Oregon based ice cream company, is now in NYC! Their ice cream is delicious and may rival my favorite ice cream shops. The creative flavors and incredibly creamy ice cream base make it worth stopping by!
Lavender Honey – The Lavender Honey ice cream is a honey and lavender flavored ice cream. It is one of their core flavors. There are no mixins, so the luxuriously creamy ice cream can shine. The delicate, floral flavor of lavender comes through as the ice cream melts on your tongue. The hint of honey beautifully compliments the lavender with its complex and pure sweetness. This ice cream is reminiscent of honeyed milk steeped with lavender. It is soothing and satisfying. I like having it as a nighttime treat with herbal tea while cozied up on the couch. No sweet treat could make me more content.
Pastrami on Rye – The Pastrami on Rye ice cream includes a butterscotch ice cream base with a mustard custard swirl, pastrami from Carnegie Deli, and toasted rye crumbles. Okay, before you are scared away…I was hesitant as well. Pastrami in ice cream and mustard swirl? That sounds disgusting to me as well, but somehow it works. I promise! This is one of my favorite ice cream flavors I’ve ever eaten. The pastrami seems to not truly be pieces of meat, but rather the aromatic spices that create the crust on pastrami. The savory, flavorful spices are balanced by the caramelized sweetness of the butterscotch ice cream. And somehow, some way, the sweet, slightly spicy mustard custard blends in and melds beautifully with both the butterscotch and pastrami flavor. The crumbles of dense, nutty rye bread top it all off with an amazing texture and flavor. I am always willing to try crazy flavors and was unsure about this one. It truly surprised me! It was so delicious I dream about it now and wish I could have bought a whole pint! This flavor is not always available, so if you see it, you must try it!
